Drew Perkins discusses enlightenment liberal principles and DEIJ work | DEIJ Hot Takes

Written by

How can we honour both the right to being an individual and commitment to the community in DEIJ work?

Drew Perkins and I explore this tension in this episode of DEIJ Hot Takes.

โ€˜There’s an inherent tension between the efforts of expansive DEI and actual social justice, and the enlightenment principles that, that I think are undergirding the ways in which we should move forward.โ€™

It was a pleasure to hear Drew, a heterodoxy enthusiast, introduce and explain important ideas that are critical at this time in the DEIJ narrative. We explore the balance between individual rights and community needs, advocating for mutual cooperation and shared humanity.

  • Reading and learning about approaches to knowledge and how to engage with different views through a lens of exploration can support DEIJ work as it enables different perspectives and approaches to exist together.
  • All perspectives and approaches have value which can support progress. If we accept that while ensuring there is not a harmful dominance of one approach, we can create a more inclusive society.
  • Inclusivity requires balancing individual and community needs.
  • The safety of the community is the ultimate priority but beyond this, equity work should not limit freedom of speech and expression.
