This was a central question that Michael Neumann and I addressed during our #ISLECISLoft session on March 3rd 2026.

Moving from standalone international day celebrations and black history months, to scaffolded learning embedded in the school curriculum is the goal. Though exposure is valuable, too often schools stop at that, neglecting the steps needed that can shift understanding and shape day-to-day actions.

A man holding a colourful word cloud representing diverse identities on the left, alongside a surreal image of a human silhouette with abstract patterns on the right, illustrating a theme of transformation in education.

To support that shift, we used the #EquityLadder as a reflective tool; a way to locate where initiatives currently sit, and to identify what it would take to move them one step further.

It still amazes me that Michael and I met in person less than a year ago. It was brilliant to meet a fellow DEIJ practitioner who challenged my ideas and taught me much from his expertise. Now a few hundred hours of voice notes later, weโ€™re coโ€‘presenting ideas weโ€™ve helped each other shape, test, and refine.

It was a joy to present under the ECIS, the Educational Collaborative for International Schools banner, and even more of a joy to do it alongside a great friend.

A big thank you to everyone who joined us and Nancy Lhoest-Squicciarini for her encouragement and promotion – we are looking forward to further developing this work and perhaps creating a preconference for this work!
