Geographies of Hope: Thinking Clearly About the World

Written by

An educational graphic featuring a teacher guide and pupil booklet for 'Geographies of Hope: Thinking Clearly About the World', aimed at Key Stage 3 Geography. It includes a smiling individual surrounded by symbolic icons representing environmental themes.

Are you familiar with Factfulness by Hans Rosling?

I am sure many geographers in my network are. Itโ€™s a text that invites us to imagine the future with #hope by challenging our instincts for negativity, generalisation, and blame.

Too often we hold students back from ambitious texts in KS3 and beyond because we underestimate their ability, assume their interest, and don’t have capacity to scaffold appropriately.

That’s why I have contributed to Myatt & Co‘s KS3: The Ambitious Years resources.

In the ๐Ÿ๐ซ๐ž๐ž ๐›๐จ๐จ๐ค๐ฅ๐ž๐ญ๐ฌ ๐›๐ž๐ฅ๐จ๐ฐ, youโ€™ll find a full sequence of six lessons designed to help Grade 7 students engage meaningfully with Factfulness. The student booklet is built around a driving question:

Across the sequence, students explore key sections of the book, analyse images, maps, and graphs, engage with video resources, and build toward extended writing. They may even be inspired to finish the rest of the book!

There is also a guide for the teacher which speaks to the pedagogical underpinnings and common misconceptions so you wont get lost even if you haven’t read the text yet yourself.

If you set the bar high for your students, these might be a helpful starting point. And keep an eye: Climate change is Racist for grade 9 is coming soon.
