“A single polished narrative can flatten the complexity and silence tension which is essential for growth and equity work”
Yasmin Aslam-Hashmi shares some exceptional examples of how we can value all contributors and move from a space of discomfort to one of comfort as we create learning spaces where people belong.
Considering the needs of students both socially and pedagogically is key but Yasmin also speaks to the importance of a shared understanding of diversity. A shared understanding that makes space for the diverse range of understandings and intentions people will have based on their own backgrounds, experiences, and expertise.
It was a pleasure to speak with and listen to Yasmin and she left me chewing over some of her points that I had not previously heard communicated so clearly – this fifteen minutes might be the springboard to refresh your approach to belonging in your community.
